Varalakshmi Vratam

The Varalakshmi Vratam is a cherished vow observed chiefly by married women, dedicated to Goddess Varalakshmi — the "boon-granting" form of Lakshmi who bestows the eight-fold abundance (Ashta Lakshmi): wealth, grain, courage, progeny, victory, knowledge, prosperity, and strength. Observed on the Friday preceding the full moon in the month of Shravana, it is one of the most auspicious and joyful of women's observances.

By tradition, women undertake this vratam praying for the wellbeing, health, and longevity of their family — especially husband and children — and for prosperity and harmony within the home. A kalasha (sacred pot) crowned with a coconut and adorned as the Goddess herself is established and worshipped as the living presence of Varalakshmi, decorated with turmeric, kumkum, flowers, and new cloth.

The observance includes the tying of the sacred thread (toranam), the offering of nine or sixteen knots symbolising blessings sought, the recitation of the Varalakshmi Vratam Katha and the Sri Suktam, and the sharing of prasadam among the gathered women of the household and neighbourhood — a beautiful expression of community and shared blessing. Fasting and purity of intention accompany the day.
