Navagraha Puja

The Navagraha Puja is performed to honour and pacify the Nine Celestial Influences — Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. In Vedic thought these grahas govern the rhythms of time and the unfolding of karma in a person's life, shaping health, relationships, career, and fortune according to their placement in one's horoscope.

Devotees undertake this puja to seek harmony with these cosmic forces — to strengthen benefic influences and soften the effects of challenging planetary periods such as Sade Sati, Shani dasha, or difficult Rahu–Ketu transits. It is commonly recommended when a person faces persistent obstacles, delays, ill health, or instability that astrological counsel traces to planetary positions.

The ritual invokes each graha in turn, offering its particular grain, colour, flower, and mantra, and culminates in the recitation of the Navagraha Stotram and dedicated planetary mantras, sometimes accompanied by charitable giving (dana) associated with the planet to be appeased. The nine deities are traditionally arranged in a prescribed geometric pattern, each facing its ordained direction, reflecting the ordered cosmos the puja seeks to align the devotee with.
