Naming Ceremony (Namakaranam)

The Namakaranam — the naming ceremony — is a cherished samskara (sacred rite of passage) in which a newborn child is formally given their name amid the blessings of family, community, and the divine. Traditionally performed on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, or at another auspicious muhurtham within the early weeks, it marks the child's welcome into the family lineage and the community of dharma.

The name, in Vedic tradition, is far more than a label — it is understood to carry vibration and meaning that will accompany the child through life. The chosen name is often selected in harmony with the child's birth star (nakshatra) and the syllable it indicates, aligning the child's identity with cosmic order from the very beginning. The ceremony typically opens with a Ganapathi Puja to remove obstacles, followed by prayers for the child's health, long life, and prosperity, and the whispering of the chosen name into the child's ear.
