Lakshmi Puja

The Lakshmi Puja is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the divine mother of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and abundance — not only material riches, but the fuller wealth of health, wisdom, courage, progeny, and spiritual grace. As the consort of Lord Vishnu, she represents the nourishing, sustaining energy of the cosmos, and her presence in a home is said to bring harmony, contentment, and plenty.

Families perform this puja to welcome the Goddess into their homes and hearts, most famously on Deepavali night, when lamps are lit to guide her in, but also on Fridays, during Varalakshmi Vratam, at house-warmings, and whenever the blessings of prosperity are sought. Lakshmi is depicted seated upon a blooming lotus, gold coins flowing from her palm — the lotus a reminder that true abundance rises unstained above the waters of worldly attachment.

The ritual includes the ceremonial cleansing and decoration of the worship space with rangoli and flowers, the lighting of lamps, the offering of lotus blooms, kumkum, and sweets, and the recitation of the Sri Suktam and Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names). Cleanliness, light, and beauty are central, for the Goddess is said to dwell where there is purity, order, and devotion.

Devotees believe the puja invites financial stability, the removal of debt and scarcity, growth in business, and a household filled with peace and generosity.
