The Gruha Pravesham — the ceremonial entry into a new home — is one of the most joyful and significant of household rituals, performed to sanctify a dwelling before a family takes up residence and to invite divine blessings, prosperity, and protection into their new life together. A house, in the Vedic view, is not merely a structure but a living space to be consecrated and harmonised with cosmic and natural energies before it becomes a true home.

The ceremony traditionally begins at an auspicious muhurtham with the boiling of milk until it rises and overflows — a beautiful symbol of abundance and prosperity flowing into the home. A decorated kalasha is carried across the threshold, the entrance adorned with a toran of mango leaves and marigolds and a rangoli to welcome the divine. A Ganapathi Puja opens the proceedings to remove obstacles, followed by the worship of the Vastu Purusha — the presiding spirit of the dwelling — and often a Lakshmi Puja or Satyanarayana Vratam to invoke prosperity and truth.
