Ganapathi Homam

The Ganapathi Homam is a sacred fire ritual (homam) dedicated to Lord Ganesha, invoking his grace through Agni, the divine fire that carries offerings to the deity. As the remover of obstacles and the first to be worshipped in any undertaking, Ganesha is honoured through this homam before weddings, house-warmings, new ventures, and other major rituals to clear all impediments and ensure an auspicious, successful beginning.

In a homam, the sacred fire is kindled in a consecrated havan kund with prescribed Vedic procedure, and offerings of ghee, grains, and herbs are made into the flames as the priests chant Ganesha's mantras — the Ganapati Atharvashirsha, his moola mantra, and his 108 names. Fire worship is among the oldest and most potent forms of Vedic ritual, for Agni is regarded as the mouth of the gods and the direct messenger between the earthly and the divine; what is offered in the fire is believed to reach the deity purified and multiplied.
