Homam
Ayushya Homam
Significance
The Ayushya Homam is a sacred fire ceremony performed to invoke long life (ayush), robust health, vitality, and protection from untimely harm. Rooted in the Vedic prayer for a full and healthy span of years, it is among the most tender and hopeful of rituals — frequently performed for children on their birthdays (especially the first), for elders, for those recovering from serious illness, and for anyone seeking the blessing of wellbeing and longevity.
In the ceremony, the sacred fire is kindled in the havan kund and offerings of ghee, grains, and specific herbs are made into the flames as the priests chant the Ayushya Suktam and mantras invoking the deities of life and health — including prayers to Surya, Ayur Devata, and, in some traditions, Lord Dhanvantari or Mrityunjaya (Shiva) for protection from illness and premature death. The Mrityunjaya mantra, the great "victory over death" prayer, is often woven through the ritual.
The rising fire, the fragrance of the offerings, and the resonance of the mantras are believed to generate a protective, life-affirming vibration, dispelling negative influences and surrounding the beneficiary with auspicious energy. Performing the homam on a child's birthday, aligned with their birth star, is an especially cherished tradition, a parent's prayer for the long and healthy life of their child.
Its deeper meaning is the sanctity of life itself — an offering of gratitude for the years granted and a heartfelt petition for many more lived in health and dignity. It is a ritual of love as much as of devotion.
Our verified priests perform the complete Ayushya Homam with authentic Vedic procedure — kindling of Agni, recitation of the Ayushya Suktam and protective mantras, and the prescribed ahutis — conducted with the care and reverence this blessing deserves.
